06 February - Create a art zine - 6th grade

Materials: paper scissors magazines glue
oil pastels markers pencils

Discussion: Talk about what a zine is. A zine is a little self-published magazine. It is most commonly a small circulation of original texts and images of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier.
Zines are written in a variety of formats, from computer-printed text to comics to handwritten text . Print remains the most popular zine format, usually photo-copied with a small circulation.
If possible, show examples.
Tell students they will be making their own zine. They can choose any topic they like (A pet, sport, hobby) as a theme or just have an art and design theme. Students are free to use text, just images or both. They can make a cartoon, a story, etc. They can use any material theyʼd like. Collage, oil pastels, markers etc.
Process
1. Fold paper lengthwise, and open. (A)
2. Fold paper horizontally.(B)
3. Fold the two open ends up to the middle, front and back. Then open those folds. (C)
4. Tear or slit along center from middle to fold, as shown. (D)
5. Grasping both sides of middle from slit, pull apart and down. (E) 6. Fold into book form. (F)
7. Add text and/or images. There will be three spreads or six sides plus front and back cover.
Students can make them, trade them and collect them. The images will all be on one side of the paper so they can easily photocopy them to give to friends.
