01 October - Tints and Shade - 3rd grade

The student will learn how to make tints and shades by adding black or white.

Materials:
acrylic paint
paper plates with red, blue yellow black and white
paint brushes
paper
pencils

1. Explain tints and shades. a color plus white =tint, color plus black=shade
2. Have students draw a design with at least 6 shapes (to paint). The design can be anything, abstract or realistic but don't spent too much time on this.
3. Have students pick up a little bit of blue with their paint brush (you can demonstrate using the brush like a shovel) and put it down on an empty spot on the paper plate. Then add a little bit of white. Mix. If the want they can add more white until they are happy with the tint they created. Then they use this color to paint one or more of the shapes on their design. They just need to make sure they have enough for all 6 colors. Repeat process using blue + black, red+white, red+black, yellow+white, yellow+black. If they want to, staudents can also add pure red, blue or yellow to their design.
