02 November - Warhol Inspired Prints

Objective: to introduce the process of block print making to familiarize students with the pop art style of Andy Warhol to reinforce figure/ ground concept

Materials: printing ink brayers flat cookie sheets,glass or acrylic sheets (plates) pencils foam blocks- 1 per student construction paper cut to size(or slightly larger) of block large paper for mounting prints adhesive of choice for mounting prints

Procedure:
Introduce topic of pop art. Show images of works by artists such as Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein, and Warhol, briefly discuss elements of their style. Let them know they will be focusing on the style of Warhol and his use of multiple prints of the same image in single works. Warhol was known for silk screen printing, but they will be doing block printing. Discuss printing as a way of repeating and copying images, and how today we primarily use digital means of achieving this, but for centuries printing was the only way to achieve this. Explain procedure to students, which is as follows:
1 student will get foam block and pencil
2 student will use pencil to carve an image on block. When explaining, discuss figure and ground, and let the students know that the lines they engrave will be the parts that are not inked, so their carved lines will be the color construction paper they choose to print it on. Encourage them to choose a single large image of an every day object, as pop artists often did.
3 As students finish they will be selected to print in small groups. Each student will select 2,3, or 4 pieces of construction paper. Plate or tray will be used to get ink evenly on brayer. Students will ink block evenly with brayer. Inked surface will be carefully laid on construction paper. Dry brayer will be used on back of block to ensure ink transfer. Repeat process so each student will have at least 2 prints of their image. Prints will be placed on drying rack.
4. Wrap up and clean up
5. Docent or students will mount images on larger paper after they have dried completely.
