08 April - O'Keefe Inspired Observational Drawing - 1st grade



Objectives: to practice observational drawing skills to think about scale and create a work that fills a page to learn and practice watercolor techniques

materials: -white card stock -pencils -flowers, shells, and other natural objects -watercolors -paintbrushes -black sharpies -water bowls

Procedure:
-Explain that they will be drawing a single flower or shell, and that their job will be to look carefully at their object, draw what they really see, and make sure that their drawing touches all 4 sides of their paper!
-Show artwork by Georgia O'keefe and others that fill the whole canvas with a single image
-Explain that they should pretend they are a bee or a ladybug, and that they are buzzing or crawling around their flower, drawing a bugs-eye view
-demonstrate sketching to fill page and show how you will next go over lines with sharpie, and finally water color the whole piece
-students will draw and paint at their own pace -wrap up discussion and clean up
