December - Creating Textures

Materials: watercolor paper
watercolor brushes
patterned brushes
spray bottles
construction paper
tempera paint
crayons
texture boards
Book: Eric Carle - Dragons and Other Animals that Never Were
Artwork: Girl holding dog

Discussion:
1. Read a book by Eric Carle to students - study the art work and speculate how it was made
2. Discuss texture - Ask if anyone knows what texture is -the way something feels (smooth, fluffy, rough...), also the way something looks like it would feel. Show the picture of the Girl holding the dog. Ask how the dog looks like it would feel. Ask the kids if it really feels like that when they touch the painting.
3. Demonstrate various painting techniques to be used by students: wet -in- wet, spatter painting, textured brushes, crayon resist rubbings.

Procedures:
Have different stations set up around the room for the various techniques. Do about 10 min. per rotation.
1. Wet-in-wet water color - wet watercolor paper completely then add paint
2. Splatter painted watercolor with spray bottles

3. Patterned brushes with tempera paint on paper

4. Crayon texture rubbings - cover sheet of drawing paper with various
textures For more variety, use these processes over colored construction papers. Treat the painting of the papers purely as an abstract painting exercise. Make sure they put their names in the corners of their paper, and dry them in one area of the drying racks.

  1. I think this lesson went really well. Keys to success included keeping an eye on time so that each student had enough time at each station. Mrs. K used a bell to signal transition times. Carla also was very clear about explaining appropriate use of spray bottles while the kids were still on the rug, which helped avoid trouble. She also detailed the materials and procedures for each station. This is one of the lessons where it's helpful to have at least 2 docents or volunteers, because you constantly need to put wet papers on the drying rack while all the activity is going on.
