Objective:
The objective of this lesson is to introduce and give hands on experience with the idea of color schemes and their effects. (Similar colors blend - complementary colors pop out.)
Process:
Remind the students of the primary colors – red, blue yellow and secondary colors – orange, green, purple. Today we’ll talk about color schemes – what is a scheme = a plan of colors that an artist wants to use in an artwork. When you guys draw a picture do you think about which colors to use before hand or do you choose randomly as you go along – artist do both – when they choose colors they have a lot of different reasons for choosing the colors that they do. Maybe they want things to blend together or maybe they want something to stand out. Maybe they use colors that are the way they look in nature, green trees, blue sky. We are going to be looking at some of these plans or color schemes today. Some of them I bet you already know. I’m going to show you a picture and lets talk about the colors – what colors do you see? Green, blue purple – cold colors. Red, orange, yellow - Warm colors. Did you know that colors have opposites? Black/white but all colors have their opposites too. Any idea what the opposite of red is? green Artists call opposite colors complementary. When complementary colors are next to each other they look brighter. When complementary colors are mixed together they make gray. Artists might use complementary colors when they want something to stand out.
1. have students put wax paper under their paper to prevent the paper from sticking to the table.
2. Students can cut or tear colorful art tissues into strips or other shapes
3.Arrange the tissue shapes or strips on the background paper, letting them cross over each other so they will blend and blur.
4. "Paint" over them with modge podge
